1.(a)  What is performance management?

Performance Management can be defined as a strategic and integrated approach to delivering sustained success to organisations by improving the performance of the people who work in them and by developing the capabilities of teams and individual contributors (Armstrong and Baron, 1998)

Performance Management provides a framework of planned goals, standards and competences required in the organisation to ensure increased profitability and success through alignment of individual objectives on the Organisation’s vision and goals.    It helps to establish a shared and clear understanding about what is to be achieved, and an approach to managing and developing people in a way that increases the probability in the short and longer term.
