1.(b) What is the difference between performance management and performance appraisal?

The PM is a systematic work related process that provides a framework for managers to give effective support to their team members.  It comprises of 3 steps:
1.                  Plan and set job objectives and behaviours and align on the strategies and goals of the     organisation
2.                  Monitor the planned performance – give regular feedback on level reached.
3.                  Performance Review for the defined period: Provide feedback on performance reached: results v/s expectations and identify development needs.

Performance appraisal is an element/ the final step of the performance management system.
A meeting is conducted with the employee concerned to evaluate the level of performance achieved versus expected results. During this meeting, performance gaps will also be identified and adequate training will be agreed to help bring performance to expected standards. Manger and employee may also start a discussion about future objectives. Preparation is essential both for the Manager and the employee to be able to carry out effective appraisal discussion.
